Objective: The aim of this study was to develop a model for explaining and predicting feeling of estrangement among dormitory students at Bu-Ali Sina University in Hamedan, based on the variables of emotional alexithymia and perceived stress.
Methods: This was a descriptive correlational study. The statistical population included all dormitory students at Bu-Ali Sina University in Hamedan (more than 4,500 individuals). A sample of 385 students was selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using the Van Fleet Feeling of Estrangement Questionnaire, the Toronto Emotional Alexithymia Questionnaire, and the Cohen Perceived Stress Questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out using stepwise multiple linear regression.
Results: The results showed that the variables of difficulty in identifying emotions and perceived stress were able to explain about 24% of the changes in homesickness. Emotional alexithymia did not directly play a significant role in predicting homesickness, but it was significantly associated with difficulty in identifying and describing emotions.
Conclusions: Difficulty in identifying emotions and perceived stress were identified as the main predictors of feeling of estrangement. These findings may inform the design of psychological interventions aimed at reducing estrangement and enhancing dormitory students’ adjustment. Strengthening skills in emotion recognition and expression, along with stress management strategies, are recommended approaches for improving mental health and quality of life among students.
